Camellia Morris Selected For 2022 Salon des Refusés

I am pleased to announce that my portrait of Jeff Fatt has been selected for the 2022 Salon des Refusés, the 'alternative' Archibald Prize selection at the S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney. Jeff Fatt is the original purple Wiggle in Australia’s most successful children’s group.

Jeff is best known for falling asleep onstage where the audience is invited to shout out: “Wake up Jeff!”.  Given the opportunity, I was excited to paint Jeff doing exactly what he does best!

As an artist of Australian-Chinese heritage, it is a joy to pay homage to another Australian-Chinese who has entertained generations of children over three decades.  I am inspired by Jeff’s contribution even after retirement, culminating in the Wiggles winning Triple J’s Hottest 100, and 68-year-old Jeff being named the oldest winner of the Hottest 100, in January 2022.

The portrait is titled, 'Sleeping on the job', oil on canvas, 101 x 152 cm. The Salon des Refusés opens on Saturday 14 May and continues until Sunday 24 July at the S.H. Ervin Gallery, Observatory Hill (The Rocks).
Camellia's portrait is featured in The Sydney Morning Herald's article Rejects as much a part of the Archibald Prize as winner in May 2022.
